Italian regulator fines OpenAI EUR 15M over training data and transparency

Italy's data protection authority fined OpenAI EUR 15 million in December 2024 for training ChatGPT on personal data without an adequate legal basis, breaching transparency duties and lacking age verification. OpenAI called the fine disproportionate and said it would appeal.
